What to Expect from Maximo Application Suite 9.1 in June 2025

As digital transformation accelerates across industries, IBM continues to strengthen its commitment to modern, intelligent enterprise asset management. The upcoming release of IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) 9.1, scheduled for June 2025, represents a strategic leap forward in performance, security, usability, and platform capabilities.

This release is designed not only to meet the evolving needs of asset-intensive organizations but also to provide IT and operations teams with a robust and future-ready environment.

Key Enhancements in MAS 9.1

New Applications and Features

Maximo Application Suite (MAS) 9.1 brings several new applications and features aimed at improving asset and facilities management efficiency:

  • Work Order Summary: This feature offers an alternative to traditional work order tracking by providing a comprehensive overview of work order progress. Users can easily monitor statuses, update critical fields, initiate follow-up actions, and move work orders through different workflow stages—all from a streamlined interface.
  • Maintenance Cost Summary: This new feature simplifies the aggregation of various maintenance-related costs—such as labor, materials, tools, and services—associated with completed work orders for assets. Costs can be rolled up either manually or automatically to the highest-level asset within the hierarchy, providing clearer insights into overall maintenance expenses.
  • Inspection Form Builder: Designed to simplify inspection processes, this tool allows users to create customized, user-friendly inspection forms suitable for both desktop and mobile devices. It makes form creation and deployment faster and more intuitive, helping teams capture accurate inspection data on the go.
  • Interactive Dashboards: Building on the interactive dashboards introduced in MAS 8 and enhanced in Maximo Application Suite 9.0, MAS 9.1 further expands this capability. Dashboards enable users to filter and switch between different data queries and perform actions directly within the dashboard interface. The latest release offers more personalized dashboards tailored to specific user roles, enhancing data visibility and decision-making.

Migration to Java 17:

One of the most significant technical updates in Maximo Application Suite 9.1 is the migration to Java 17, a long-term support (LTS) version that delivers notable improvements in system performance and security. This transition lays a stronger foundation for the platform by leveraging the latest advancements in the Java ecosystem, enabling faster execution and enhanced protection against vulnerabilities.

However, this upgrade also introduces important considerations for existing deployments. Custom components, including automation scripts, Java-based extensions, and integrations developed on earlier Java versions, will require recompilation and thorough testing to ensure they remain fully compatible with Java 17.

Additionally, the release also includes an upgrade to BIRT version 4.16 and the adoption of OpenJDK Nashorn libraries, which may affect existing reports and scripts that rely on older JavaScript engines. Careful review and adjustment of custom components will be necessary to ensure a smooth transition.

Enhanced Security and Performance Improvements

The March 2025 Feature Channel release of Maximo Application Suite 9.1 brings critical security updates and notable performance improvements designed to enhance system reliability and user experience. A key fix targets issues with SCIM Group Synchronization from Microsoft Entra ID, which previously caused race conditions leading to delays or inconsistencies in updating user email information. By resolving these synchronization challenges, the update ensures more accurate and timely user record management.

In addition, the release addresses stability problems with the pod internal API, which could cause system instability, especially in environments with a large number of users. These improvements help maintain smooth operation and better performance in high-demand deployments.

Support for Red Hat OpenShift 4.16 and IBM Cloud Pak for Data 5.0

The December 2024 Feature Channel release of Maximo Application Suite (IBM MAS) 9.1 introduced official support for Red Hat OpenShift 4.16 and IBM Cloud Pak for Data 5.0. This update ensures that Maximo Application Suite 9.1 stays fully compatible with these cutting-edge, enterprise-grade platforms, enabling organizations to leverage the latest technologies for container orchestration and advanced data management.

By integrating with these updated platforms, MAS offers a more robust and scalable infrastructure, allowing users to deploy and manage their asset management solutions more efficiently. This enhanced compatibility supports improved resource utilization, flexibility in deployment options, and stronger performance—helping enterprises meet their evolving operational demands with confidence.

Installation and Upgrade Considerations

The MAS 9.1 Feature Channel releases are accessible through channel subscription and are intended primarily for non-production environments. These releases provide users with early access to evaluate and test new features before they are officially included in the main production release. It’s important to note that IBM Support will only accept support cases related to the latest available Feature Channel bundle deployed in non-production settings, with issue severity levels limited to 3 or 4.

For organizations planning to upgrade from earlier versions of Maximo Application Suite, it is highly recommended to thoroughly review the official technical documentation and upgrade guidelines provided by IBM. This preparation will help ensure a smooth and successful transition to Maximo Application Suite 9.1.

Release Schedule

IBM follows a consistent annual release schedule for the Maximo Application Suite, delivering one major update each year. The anticipated release timeline is as follows:

  • MAS 9.0: June 2024
  • MAS 9.1: June 2025
  • MAS 9.2: June 2026 (projected)

Each major release receives three years of base support. Additionally, organizations can purchase an initial extended support period of one year, followed by an option for ongoing extended support for up to three more years.
